NORTH TEXAS MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT
Free Chlorine Maintenance

The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) would like all of its Member Cities, Customers, and direct consumers to be aware that free chlorine maintenance will be conducted on the Wylie water transmission system and customers' distribution systems for a 30 day period from February 19, 2010, to March 25, 2010.

Why does the NTMWD perform free chlorine maintenance?
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) allows water suppliers to perform a free chlorine maintenance. Free chlorine maintenance helps reduce the need for water suppliers to flush systems in order to maintain chloramine residual (required by the TCEQ) during the warm weather periods, thus conserving water.

Free chlorine maintenance lasts about 30 days and is performed in cool weather months when water temperature is lower.

What are chloramines?
The NTMWD utilizes chloramines, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, in the water treatment process and to provide the disinfectant residual in the transmission and distribution systems as required by the TCEQ. Chloramines provide a longer lasting residual disinfection in water pipelines and storage facilities.

How does this process affect drinking water quality?
Free chlorine maintenance does not affect water quality and remains safe for use. During this period, consumers who are sensitive to taste and odor changes in drinking water might notice a change during this period. This palatability change does not alter the quality of the drinking water provided to consumers.

Who do I contact if I have questions?
If you have any questions regarding this maintenance, please contact:

(January 13, 2010)
To All NTMWD Member Cities and Customers:

The NTMWD has confirmed that a winter algal bloom is occurring in Lavon Lake. Taste and odor changes in treated drinking water caused by blooms may be detected by your consumers who are more sensitive to these changes. The taste and odor is a palatability issue only. The palatability change that results from a naturally occurring algal bloom does not alter the quality of the water provided to the cities and the communities served by NTMWD. The water supply remains safe for use with no health risks created by these events.

If you should receive calls from consumers, you may link to or direct them to our Web site for more information on what algal blooms are and the steps NTMWD is taking to minimize the taste and odor issues caused by algal blooms.

In addition, the Web site information has been updated to include information regarding the ozone implementation plan for the Wylie Water Treatment Plants and how this treatment process, once on-line, should significantly reduce and/or eliminate the taste and odor issues caused by algal blooms.
