The Texas Transportation Commission recently voted to double the height of the approximately 20,000 existing billboards along Texas’ federally-funded roadways — an increase from 42.5 feet to 85 feet.  The new height rule, as it is written, would allow any billboard in existence as of March 1, 2017 to be raised as high as 85 feet and allow TxDOT to issue permits within cities that have their own regulations if the billboard is located along a federally funded roadway.

However, the Commission has delayed the effective date until September 3, 2019 to allow time for the Texas Legislature to weigh in on the issue.
